What is Tofu

Tofu, also called Bean Curd, is a food made from soy beans. It is of Chinese origin, and it is also a part of East Asian and Southeast Asian cuisine such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Singapore, Indonesian, Thailand, and other. Nowadays it is also a popular food in Europe and American.
Tofu has very little flavor or smell on its own, so it can be used to cook any styles of dishes with other materials (vegetables and meats) either in savory or sweet.

Tofu like cheese, but is the curd soybean milk, so it’s essentially dairy-free cheese. It can be cut easily into different shapes no matter what is the density of it. This characteristic Cheese doesn’t have. It comes in many textures, from soft to extra firm. It can be stewed, roasted, grilled, sautéed, or boiled. If add some apt flavor it can be cooked with the taste like meats. So in many cases we can use Tofu to replace meat.

  • According to scientific study soy beans contain very high Protein. If calculated by volume soybeans have more protein than beef, and if by weight soybeans contain as much protein as beef. As we know protein is an important nutrition for maintenance, growth and general wellbeing of human body. If some people are not suitable to eat meats they can just using Tofu or soybeans from which to obtain necessary protein for their bodies. In fact Tofu is an important source of protein in the vegetarian diet of East Asian Buddhism.
  • They have a Glycemic load of 1, meaning when you eat them, they have virtually no impact on your blood-sugar level. Because this food comes from a plant. Soy bean foods have been shown having the effect to lower glucose levels, all of which makes them a peerless choice for blood-sugar control.
  • Soybean products are great for heart health, thanks to their good fats, fiber, and cholesterol lowering plant sterols. They also may reduce the risk of a serious diabetes complication: kidney disease.
  • Soy also has compounds called isoflavones that mimic estrogen, which can help ease menopausal discomforts, and lower the risk of several types of cancer including prostate, breast and endometrial.
  • Tofu contains as low amount of calories, relatively large amount of iron, and a little fat. It is also high in calcium and magnesium.

Tofu (soybean) has so many good advantage for health, so in the medical field, doctors of nutrition and heart disease all advice people to take more foods of soybeans and tofu to keep health and reduce the risk of diabetes.

Normal Tofu

Tofu is made by coagulating soy milk and the pressing the resulting curds into soft white blocks, It comes in many textures, from soft to extra firm. The normal tofu’s firmness is medium. Compared with other variations of tofu it is mostly used by the people, it can be roasted, sautéed, stewed, fried, and boiled. It can be cooked alone or with other vegetables, meats and sea foods.

Soft Tofu

Soft Tofu is made just by coagulating soy milk but without pressing. The color of Soft Tofu is also white and looks like putting. It is usually used for making soup, salad. It also can be fired. Or you can just sprayed some flavors or sweet on the top and eat it like putting.

Firm Tofu

It could be understood easily by its name. Compared with normal Tofu, Firm Tofu is a little bit hard and contains less water. It also shapes white color (some times yellow) block, but the thickness is less, about 3cm high.

Pressed Tofu (x-firm)

The firmness and density of Pressed Tofu is the highest among the variations of Tofu. Its shapes look like square biscuit. Normally has two colors, white one which is not cooked, and brown one which is cooked with soy sauce and other flavors by the manufacturers.

Tofu Sheet

Looks like spring roll sheet and wonton wrapper, but Tofu Sheet is made from soy beans. The thichness of Tofu sheet is about 0.5mm-1mm. it ca be used for cooking many different kinds of dishes (cuisines). For instance, to make Tofu Sheet Rolls stuffed with vegetables, meats or sea foods. You can cut the tofu Sheet into small pieces (slices or square shape) and cook them with other materials, or make soup, or make salad.

Fried Tofu

Cut the normal Tofu into small pieces and then fry them, that’s the way Fried Tofu is made. There are different shapes of Fried Tofu, cubic, Flat Square, and triangle. It is usually cooked with other vegetables, meats, and sea foods to make different cuisines.
